How is my math status determined?

Math status is determined by a number of multiple measures (e.g. academic coursework, Smarter Balance Assessment, SAT/ACT Scores, etc.).

Where can I view my Math and Written Communication status?

You can view your Math and Written Communication status in your student center. The milestones area is where you will find your specific status and it will show you where or not it has been completed.

Which math course should I take?

You may view which math course is appropriate to take based on your major by reviewing the Appropriate Math Course by Major web page.

Which English course should I take?

Students have two options for completing their first year writing requirement at CI. You may choose between a two-semester stretch (ENGL 102/ENGL 105) or to take the one semester ENGL 105 course. Please visit the Composition Program web-page for more information about these courses.

What if I pass the math course but not the support course?

If you pass the GE B4: Math course with a C- or better but do not pass the support course (Math 97, 98 or 99) you do not need to repeat the support course. You may continue enrolling in math courses as desired.

What if I pass the support course but not the math course?

If you pass the support course (MATH 97, 98 or 99) but not the GE B4: math course you only have to repeat the B4: Math course. Repeating the support course may be helpful but is not required.

What if I do not pass both the Math and support course?

If you did not successfully complete the GE B4: Math course with a C- or better and you did not pass the support course you will need to enroll in both a B4: Math course with the corresponding support course.

What if I do not pass the second semester stretch course for math?

You will need to repeat the second semester stretch course (Math 104/MATH 200). Once you have completed the course with a C- or better you will receive credit for the General Education B4: Math/Quantitative Reasoning requirement.

What if I completed a GE B4: Math course at a community college or other university?

If you completed a CSU transferable math course at another institution, you will need to submit an official transcript to the Registrar’s Office. Your transcript will be reviewed and you will be granted credit appropriately.

You may reference ASSIST.ORG for transferable courses from any California Community College.

Official transcripts can submitted to the Registrar’s Office in the Enrollment Center. Transcripts must be in a sealed envelope.

What if I passed the AP exam for mathematics?

If you scored a 3 or better on the AP Calculus AB, Calculus BC or Statistics exam you may be eligible to receive credit for a GE: B4 Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning course. You will need to submit your official AP scores from College Board to the Registrar’s Office in Sage Hall.

What if I passed the AP exam for English?

If you scored a 3 or better on the AP English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition exam you may be eligible to receive credit for ENGL 105. ENGL 105 fulfills the General Education Requirement for English Writing (A2). You will need to submit official AP scores from College Board to the Registrar’s Office in Sage Hall.
