Completing First Year Writing

All incoming freshmen are required to complete their First Year Writing course(s) by the end of their first year. Students will be pre-registered in their initial English class based on directed self-placement. This means that students choose which course(s) they want to take for completing First Year Writing. The first year of writing at CI will allow students to satisfy the General Education: A2 Written Communication requirement. Note: The GE: A2 requirement must be completed with a C- or higher.

Students have two options for completing their first year writing requirement at CSU Channel Islands. Students may choose between a two-semester stretch (ENGL 102/ENGL 105) or to immediately take the one semester ENGL 105 course.

ENGL 102 helps students bridge the gap from high school to college writing. Successful completion of ENGL 102 in the fall prepares students to enroll in ENGL 105 in the spring. ENGL 105 moves immediately into college level writing and research, this course will fulfill the General Education Requirement for English Writing (A2).

Please reference the Composition Program webpage for detailed information.
