Prior to the Event

  • Review University policies including the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Develop a Plan: meet with a representative from the Dean of Students office to discuss logistics such as format, location, speakers, and any other items you think will lead to a sage and successful event. Please note that costs may be associated with reserving campus resources; details will be discussed during the meeting with a representative from the Dean of Students office.
  • Implement the Plan: in consultation with your campus contact, work with University Events to reserve campus resources.

During the Event

  • Speak with Campus Staff: speak with staff in attendance and let them know who is in charge from your organization and what the plan for the event entails. Staff is there for observation purposes only but will work with the organization and the CSUCI Police Department if intervention is needed.
  • Communicate Your Plan to Attendees: meet with organization members and demonstration participants to discuss the purpose of the event and what should happen if confronted by threats, harassment, or violence during the event. Groups should not respond physically - someone should call 911 immediately. Attendees should also be aware of University policies and procedures, as they also can be held responsible for their actions.
  • Report Safety Concerns Promptly: if something occurs and you need assistance, call 911 immediately.

After the Event

  • Follow up with members and participants to debrief the event.
  • Meet with a representative from the Dean of Students office to brainstorm next steps.
