Why Students Use AI at CSUCI

AI Happenings at CSUCI

The sections below are being updated as offerings and resources become available. Take a look at what's currently going on in the world of AI at CSUCI.

    • Academic Application of AI (AAAI) Self-paced Course (designed by SDSU)
A comprehensive program designed to enhance your understanding of generative AI. Whether you are a researcher, support staff, or simply curious about AI, this course offers valuable insights. To self-enroll in the course, visit the enrollment page, choose the “CSU Employee & Student Login In” button, select your campus from the dropdown menu, and click the “Enroll in Course” button on the top right.
    • Chancellor's Office AI for Teaching & Learning Microcredential
3-week, asynchronous, guided experimentation with AI tools for teaching. Read the syllabus and register to attend.
    • OneHE AI Collection of Microcredentials & Resources (funded by DAA)
Through our DAA-funded subscription to OneHE, CSUCI employees with an active OneHE account can access the catalog of courses and resources on AI in Higher Education.
    • Faculty Inquiry Project (a Faculty Development program)
In Spring 2024, Daniel Lenz and Kristen Linton host “Artificial Intelligence Ideas in the Classroom,” based (in part) onDr. Linton's TLi blog post on the potential of AI for productivity, assessment, and research.
    • Learning Design Projects (AI Focus)
TLi's grant-funded Learning Design Projects includes an AI focus for faculty who wish to receive consultation and support for experimenting with AI in some aspect of their teaching (e.g., administrative, course design, assignment redesign, etc.)
    • ChatGPT - OpenAI's ChatGPT Edu agreement is tailored specifically for the California State University (CSU) system, providing advanced AI capabilities for all employees and students. It offers the ability to build custom GPTs for sharing within campus workspaces, as well as the needed privacy and data protection, and other enterprise security such as single sign-on (SSO), and SCIM integration.
    • Adobe Firefly and other Creative Cloud Products
Firefly is Adobe's freely available generative AI tool that turns simple text prompts into images. Other generative AI features are available within Adobe's apps that require an active Creative Cloud subscription.

    Student AI Survey

During Week 2 of Spring 2024 classes, Teaching and Learning Innovations distributed a brief AI survey to students. We asked questions about whether and how students are using AI tools generally and for their course work, whether their instructors had communicated guidelines around AI usage in their courses, and what advantages or concerns students may have about AI diffusion in higher education. Instructor AI Survey

A short questionnaire was distributed to users in the Instructor role in Canvas and later to CSUCI’s Faculty Development community space in Canvas during Spring Semester Final Exams Week (May 13-17, 2024). The purpose of this survey was to gauge instructor dispositions, practices, and support preferences related to generative AI in higher education.
