The CSUCI Embedded Peer Education Collaborative Summer Institute

The CSUCI Embedded Peer Education Collaborative (EPEC) Summer Institute brings Faculty Members and Learning Center Professionals together in collaborative teams to plan for expanding and enhancing embedded peer tutoring programs. This summer-long learning experience focuses on utilizing powerful practices in embedded peer education and integrating collaborative, active learning strategies to support student success. The EPEC institute supports cross-institutional collaboration for planning, implementing, and expanding an active embedded peer education model.

The EPEC Program Details

Utilizing a hybrid learning design, the EPEC Summer Institute offers in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous activities throughout the summer. Participants meet one another in-person at the EPEC Launch Day celebration, then continue to engage with each other online as they move through the EPEC Summer Institute Canvas Course. Flexible pacing combined with synchronous check-ins allow Institute Participants to engage in the learning and collaboration while enjoying their summer freedom!

EPEC Summer Institute Launch Day

The EPEC Summer Institute begins with a full day of in-person professional development and celebration to kick off the summer of learning! The Launch Day seminar features keynote addresses and interactive workshops presented by the authors of the EPEC Core Reading texts, Dr. James Lang and Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire, both luminaries in the field of teaching and learning.

Launch Day attendees receive a copy of each of the EPEC Institute core reading texts: Small Teaching by Dr. James Lang and Teach Students How to Learn by Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire.

The EPEC Institute Launch Day is enhanced through a panel presentation from experienced embedded peer tutors and faculty partners, as well as collaborative discussions and summer goal setting between faculty members and learning center professionals.

The EPEC Institute Launch Day celebration is held on the CSUCI campus and includes an EPEC-hosted breakfast and lunch.

The EPEC Summer Institute Canvas Course

EPEC Summer Institute participants may choose to follow one of two learning pathways: one for faculty participants looking to strengthen their practice of integrating embedded peer educators into a course curriculum and classroom experience, or one for learning center professionals interested in implementing, expanding, and/or enhancing an active embedded peer education program through their learning center. Both learning pathways are built around the EPEC Institute common core texts of Small Teaching by Dr. James Lange and Teach Students How to Learn by Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire and guide participants through five asynchronous course modules. Each module is enhanced with supplemental learning materials such as OneHE Micro Courses, recommended research, podcasts, and more!

Throughout the summer, participants interact in small groups with feedback and input from experienced faculty partners, embedded tutors, and learning center professionals. There are ongoing opportunities to meet synchronously online with EPEC's Core Reading authors and Program Directors.

Mid-Summer Synchronous Virtual Session

All Institute participants come together at a mid-point in the summer for a virtual synchronous working session to share, discuss, and learn from one another's ideas and planning elements from the first half of the EPEC Canvas Course.

Institute Wrap-Up Days

The Institute wraps up with two half-days of virtual synchronous collaboration, feedback, and discussion for implementing the final plans created through the EPEC Canvas Course. These days set participants up for ongoing work throughout the academic year and beyond.

Faculty participants will culminate the Institute with an intentional plan for utilizing embedded peer educators in and out of the classroom to support students’ learning outcomes and metacognitive growth.

Learning Center Professionals will conclude the Institute having created and refined an actionable program development plan that is specific to their goals for embedded peer education on their campus.

Mid-Semester Check-In and End of Semester Debrief

EPEC Participants return mid-way through the fall semester to debrief on the implementation  of their summer work. Through collaborative conversation and wisdom-sharing, participants have an opportunity to stay responsive to the realities presented while teaching in real-time. At the end of the semester, EPEC Participants are invited to a debriefing session, reflecting on their learning and implementation of strategies, while setting new goals for future work.
