President Rush invites you to the North Hall groundbreaking. CI’s MVS School of Business & Economics presents the 2010 Fall Speaker Series. The Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics at CSU Channel Islands will present a series of three speakers beginning Friday, October 8. All three programs include lunch and are free and open to the public. Speaking on October 8 from 12 to 2 p.m. in Aliso Hall Room 150 on the CI campus will be Pamela Lopker, founder and President of QAD, located in Santa Barbara. In March 2001 Fortune Magazine named her “Hero of U.S. Manufacturing.” She will speak about her background and her experience starting her firm and entrepreneurship. Upcoming speakers include Dr. Sung Won Sohn, Martin V. Smith Endowed Professor of Economics, and Jeffrey S. Klein, Chairman and former CEO of 101 Communications. The Camarillo Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group (YPG) is hosting their Semi-annual Professional Development Seminar on Friday, October 15th. The event goes from 8:15 a.m. – 12 p.m. and is located at the Hampton Inn & Suites. This year’s topic is “Breaking Down Modern Marketing” and will focus on marketing your business through social media avenues, search engine optimization techniques, new ways of networking, and lead database optimization for online or offline marketing campaigns. Back to College Night in DC was a big hit for CSU Channel Islands! The California State Society hosted the annual Back to College Night event for D.C. Area California College alumni on September 15, 2010 on Capitol Hill. Alumni participants from most all of the CSU and UC campuses came to represent their colleges. Two CSU Channel Islands alumni represented CI and were quite successful with promoting dolphin pride to California alumni and Federal legislators. Special thanks to Chelsee Bente ‘09 BA Political Science/History and Brian McAleney ‘07 BA Psychology for proudly representing CI.

CSU Channel Islands and Santa Barbara City College announce business degree program. CSU Channel Islands and Santa Barbara City College signed a formal agreement on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. It established a partnership to offer CI’s Bachelor of Science Business program in the Santa Barbara area at SBCC. The signing ceremony took place at SBCC’s Luria Conference and Press at the top of La Playa Stadium on East campus. The Business program offered through CI’s Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics will begin in fall 2011 at SBCC pending approval of the site. The 7th Annual Alumni Dodger Day – Success for the CI Alumni & Friends! About 100 CSU Channel Islands Alumni & Friends members were in attendance at Dodger Stadium on a perfect day on September 18th. Sponsored mini sunscreens were passed out and free A&FA Dodger Day t-shirts were distributed. Although the Rockies beat the Dodgers 12-2, it was still a perfect day for a Dodger Dog and America’s favorite pastime. CI Political Scientists Challenge Belief about Congressional Earmarks in New Book. In recent years, special congressional appropriations known as ‘earmarks’ have become synonymous with wasteful government spending and corruption. However, two CSU Channel Islands Professors of Political Science do not necessarily agree. Scott Frisch and Sean Kelly’s new book Cheese Factories on the Moon: Why Earmarks are Good for American Democracy was released this mid-September by Paradigm Publishers. A highly readable book, Frisch and Kelly use well developed case-studies to illustrate how earmarks address local concerns and how earmarks have been used to promote projects with profound national consequences, along with other significant points. CI student winner of Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award. The California State University selected 23 students, one from each campus in the system to receive the 2010/11 William R. Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement. The Trustees honored the scholars on Sept. 21 at the CSU Office for the Chancellor in Long Beach, California. Among the winners is CSU Channel Islands student Leticia Aguayo. The Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award is given to students who have demonstrated financial need, experienced personal hardships, and have attributes such as superior academic performance, exemplary community service and significant personal achievements. The $3,000 scholarship award is among the highest forms of recognition for student achievement in the CSU.

Two Latin Grammy Nominations for VC Composer Miguel del Aguila. The Latin Recording Academy announced its nominations for this year’s Latin Grammy awards. Included among the nominees was composer Miguel del Aguila’s CD: Salon Buenos Aires. Aguila has lived in Ventura County since 1992 and teaches courses on music history and composition at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of California State University Channel Islands. “I am extremely proud to represent both Ventura County and CSU Channel Islands in this way,” Aguila stated, “‘Clocks’, which was nominated for Best Contemporary Work, was commissioned by Burns Taft for the Ventura Music Festival and premiered here.” Additional information about Aguila can be found at www.migueldelaguila.com.

CI Faculty Member Leads Effort to Assess Long-term Effects of Gulf Oil Spill. Sean Anderson, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at CSU Channel Islands, has had a long involvement with the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. His students became so involved that they mobilized with students across CI to raise money for the Red Cross but wanted to do yet more to help. After BP’s oil spill, Anderson felt that someone needed to define the problems in a way that didn’t compete with local efforts. He pulled together a group of 23 individuals interested in working on this major overview of the situation in the gulf. For more information visit http://csuci.esrm.edu.
