California State University Channel Islands offers international exchange students the opportunity to enroll in courses on campus with regular domestic university students. In return, CI students have an opportunity to study at the partner educational institution: Institutional Partners.

Fall Semesters

  • Nomination Deadline: March 15
  • Application Deadline: April 1

Spring Semesters

  • Nomination Deadline: October 1
  • Application Deadline: October 15

Admission Requirements

  • To apply for the J-1 Exchange program at CI you must be enrolled at one of our Institutional Partners
  • You must be nominated by your Institution’s International Office
  • Complete J-1 Exchange Application
  • Verify Financial Support (information in exchange application)
  • English Proficiency Score (TOEFL-internet based score 61, IELTS 6.0, or DAAD B or better, Eiken Pre-1)
  • Official Transcripts
  • Provide passport copy (US passport holders are not eligible for exchange.)
  • Complete Course Request Form

Application Documents

Once Admitted

  • Apply for your J-1 visa at US Consulate (instruction is included in your pre-departure packet)
  • Los Angeles International Airport is the nearest international airport
  • J-1 status students must provide proof of insurance coverage through JCB Insurance Solutionsat least one month prior to program start date.
  • Follow all regulations regarding immunizations, please visit CSU Channel Islands Student Health Center.
  • Please note that specific classes you choose may have a nominal class related fee (e.g. lab fee), if you enroll in these classes you are required to pay the fee related to the specific class.
