Oct. 2, 2017

As many of you have heard, a mass shooting occurred late last night at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas, Nevada.  As many as 50+ individuals were killed with 400+ injured in this horrific and senseless shooting.

At this time, we are not aware of any members of the CSUCI community being directly injured in this tragic event, but all of us are impacted and heartbroken. Should we learn new information about members of our campus community, we will inform the campus.

As you may be aware, Southern Nevada was my home for many years and my heart breaks for all of the members of my Nevada family.  One of my former staff members was among those we lost last night.

As we try to make sense of this horrific event, I ask that we all come together and find solace in supporting one another as we seek hope and light from the depths of our sadness. Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with our fellow Americans who have lost a family member or friend, and we extend positive thoughts for those who will be recovering for many months and years to come.

I would also like to make a point to thank the first responders who were there to help. Their heroism cannot be understated and we are tremendously grateful.

We have lowered our campus flags to half-staff to remember all of those who are no longer with us and to maintain heartfelt support for all those who are recovering both physically and psychologically from this atrocious incident.

I encourage students to seek counseling from our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 805-437-2088 or for employees to seek assistance from our Employee Assistance Program.  Additionally, Student Affairs and CAPS staff will be available today from 3 to 4 p.m. on red blankets at the Central Mall to support conversations with students and the campus community. I hope you will join us as we find strength and unity during this heartbreaking situation.

Sincerely,

Erika D. Beck, Ph.D.

President
