When conflict within an office or department seems to go beyond a few people or a certain policy, an informal climate assessment can help the group understand better what’s going on. It also provides a shared basis of understanding to explore options for improvement.

With an informal climate assessment, the University Ombuds confidentially interviews all members of the organization, exploring themes such as communication, power dynamics, and perceptions of safety. Participation is entirely voluntary. The Ombuds then shares the impressions gained with all who are interested one-on-one. If desired, the Ombuds will also facilitate a discussion about the assessment and follow-on actions. In developing the assessment, the Ombuds does not create a formal report and does not share confidences or individual comments without consent.
