The Cause and Tracy S. Hanna Scholarship commemorates the contributions of the late
Cause Hanna and his spouse Tracy Hanna to the CSU Channel Islands Community. As the
founding Director of the Santa Rosa Island Research Station, Cause Hanna profoundly
impacted the lives of every person who visited the Station. His enthusiasm for the
student-centered mission of CSU Channel Islands was always on display. Tracy Hanna
and their children contributed to Cause’s work. They welcomed and worked with visitors,
creating an open, family atmosphere.
The purpose of this scholarship is to preserve the memory of Cause and Tracy Hanna’s
work in the community. Scholarship funds are intended to defray the cost of tuition
and fees for students returning to CSUCI in the next academic year. In addition to
the scholarship, if the student is not already participating in island based research,
they will have the opportunity to participate in a trip to the Santa Rosa Island Research
Station (SRIRS) in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026.
We encourage applications from any student who is:
- Conducting natural science or archeology research or has plans to conduct research related to the Channel Islands or Southern California Coast - in consultation with Santa Rosa Island Station Research Staff on priority projects
- Interested in forming a deeper connection with the Channel Islands or Southern California Coast by working with Santa Rosa Island Research Station staff to plan and host an educational workshop, presentation, or other activity to educate the university and/or broader community about the Channel Islands
Benefits: This $2,500 scholarship is intended to support student research related to the California Channel Islands, especially research focused on Santa Rosa Island, the Southern California Coast, or other activities that will educate the university and/or broader community about the Channel Islands. Scholarship funds are intended to defray the cost of tuition and fees for students returning to CSUCI in the next academic year. In addition to the scholarship, the student will participate in a trip to the Santa Rosa Island Research Station (SRIRS) in Academic Year 2025/2026. This year we will be able to award one scholarship in the amount of $2,500.
Application materials: The application asks students to submit a 500 to 1,000 word description of their proposed research focused on the Channel Islands or the Southern Coast of California and conducted as a Capstone or Independent Research Project. Applicants proposing to work on projects they are not currently involved in should list potential research questions of interest on the Channel Islands, and SRIRS staff will work with the recipient to pair them with a priority project
Questions about the application process should be directed to SRIRS Director, Robyn
Shea: robyn.shea@csuci.edu
