Reinstatement

Reinstatement is the process that allows students who were previously academically disqualified to return to CSUCI as regular students and resume coursework toward their bachelor’s degree.

To be eligible for reinstatement, academically disqualified students must raise both their CSUCI and Overall GPAs to 2.0 or higher.

  • Take Classes through Open University

Even though you’ve been academically disqualified, you can still take CSUCI classes through a different registration and enrollment process called Open University. The classes you take through Open University will affect both your overall and your CSUCI GPA, so this is the most straightforward way to raise both GPAs at one time.

    Important notes about Open University:

    • Open University tuition is per unit and Open University students do not qualify for financial aid. See the Open University Fees webpage for current tuition rates.
    • Up to 24 units of credit taken through Open University may be applied to a CSUCI bachelor’s degree.

This means you will want to strategically plan what you take through Open University to make the most of your time and money.

    To Get Started:

    1. Download the Academic Disqualification GPA Recovery Plan worksheet.
    2. Use the CSUCI GPA Calculator to find your current GPAs and graded attempted units.
    3. Review the CSUCI repeat policy and check how many units you have already repeated for grade forgiveness and grades averaged.
    4. Review your course history and make a list of any classes in which you earned a grade of C- or lower. This can help you identify courses you may want to repeat to improve your GPA.
      • If you have exceeded the repeat limits for a single course and/or the overall repeat limits, additional approval will be required to repeat courses:
        • To repeat a course more than once: submit an Exception to Course Repeat Policy form.
          • Contact the Department Chair (if it’s a major course) or the Director of Academic Advising (if it’s a GE course) and provide a statement explaining why you were unable to pass the course before, a plan to be successful in the course moving forward, and supporting documentation if applicable.
        • To be allowed to repeat more than 28 units: submit a Petition for Exception to Academic Policy to repeat another course.
    5. Submit the Open University Intent to Enroll and register for courses when you are eligible to do so. Find more information about how to register through Open University here.

Call our front office at 805-437-8571 and request a reinstatement appointment to meet with an academic advisor for assistance creating a plan to raise your GPA.

Take Classes at a Community College

Taking classes at a community college may be an option for you if you have lower division requirements missing and need to raise your overall GPA. Courses taken at a community college will not raise your CSUCI GPA, so you may still need to take Open University courses to be eligible for reinstatement.

Call our front office at 805-437-8571 and request a reinstatement appointment to meet with an academic advisor to see if community college classes are a viable option for you as you work towards raising your GPAs.

  • Congratulations on putting in the hard work and raising your GPAs to 2.0!

Use our Petition for Reinstatement Guide to help you prepare your petition.

Follow the instructions on the Academic Appeals Petition for Reinstatement webpage to submit your petition for reinstatement.

Students shall receive notification of a decision within 3-5 weeks of the petition for reinstatement deadline.

After your petition for reinstatement is approved, you will need to meet with an Academic Advisor to fill out an Application for Reinstatement form. The form will then need to be submitted to the Registrar's Office for processing. Call our front office at 805-437-8571 and request a reinstatement appointment to meet with an academic advisor after your petition has been approved.
