Articulation
Definition and Importance
Course articulations are at the core of student credit transfers and play an important role in enrollment management of transfer students. Courses are articulated when content of courses and student learning outcomes are evaluated to be similar between two or more institutions. Articulating courses and transferable credit toward degree completion helps students map which courses to take for a smooth transition between Higher Education institutions. Students and institutions benefit from transfer credit agreements done in advance, before a student applies for any specific program. The more equivalencies that exist, the better informed potential transfer students are, and better prepared will be to start and succeed in the program of their choice.
Articulation at CSUCI
The Academic Programs Office is responsible for setting up articulations in the database, visible and searchable by students, counselors and advisors from other institutions, and the public in general. At CSUCI, the Transfer Credit Resources reside in the Registrar's Office page. Department and major articulation agreements reside in ASSIST. Course equivalencies reside in TES.
ASSIST stands for Articulation System Stimulating Interinstitutional Student Transfer and it's the official source of articulation for public colleges and universities in California and some institutions affiliated with the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities. The courses articulated between CSUCI and other institutions in ASSIST go through a rigorous collaborative, vetting process involving faculty and staff. This process is coordinated by the University Articulation Officer and the Articulation and Support Systems Analyst.
Besides transfer agreements for CSUCI courses and programs, ASSIST also specifically tracks the following types of courses:
- CSU Transferable
- CSU General Education (GE) - Breadth Certification
- CSU US History, Constitution, and American Ideals Courses
- IGETC for UC and CSU
TES stands for Transfer Evaluation System and is from CollegeSource. This resource includes course equivalencies from institutions of higher education. The course equivalencies between CSUCI and other institutions in TES go through a rigorous collaborative, vetting process involving faculty and staff. This process is coordinated by the University Articulation Officer and the Articulation and Support Systems Analyst.
