How to Guides/FAQs for navigating through CSU Learn for employees and managers

Note: These courses are taken through our CSU Learn system and can be completed at an employee's workstation. These courses will be assigned during the first month of new employment (faculty, staff, management and student employees). Supervisors should schedule approximately 6 hours for a new employee to complete assigned courses and are expected to follow-up with employees to ensure completion.

For current employees, required courses are continuous and timely completion (within 30 days of automatic reminder notification) is expected throughout employment at CSUCI. Course completions will display in 24 hours, after nightly batch updates in CSU Learn.

All employees returning to campus and who are assigned the coursePrior to physically returning on campusThis course covers General Guidance for All Workers and Employers. Review best hygiene practices: Frequently wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand rub with at least 60% alcohol.  Practice good respiratory etiquette, including covering coughs and sneezes. This course was designed to be comprehensive and updated to comply with Cal/OSHA regulations. Contact HR or EHS with questions.

Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation Prevention Program for Supervisors

2 hours

Auto assigned to All MPPs/ Administrators and Leads

2 hours of training within six (6) months of hire or assumption of supervisory responsibilities.

2 hours every two years thereafter

As required under California Assembly Bills 1825, 1343, 1300, 778, 188 supervisors must identify, discourage, eliminate, and remedy any illegal discrimination, harassment, or retaliation that they know of or simply suspect. Carrying out this responsibility requires a thorough understanding of anti-discrimination laws and harassment itself so that supervisors can address problems effectively. Auto assigned to All Non-MPP / Administrators who do not qualify as a supervisor

1 hour of training within six (6) months of hire

1 hour every two years thereafter

This course is designed to raise awareness about workplace harassment and discrimination, and to reduce or prevent incidents of misconduct. Using engaging exercises and real-world examples, the course fosters a clear understanding of anti-discrimination laws. It trains employees on inappropriate conduct so that they can apply what they learn to everyday situations. Required under CSU Executive Orders 1096 and 1097. Contact HR.

Gender Equity and Title IX (previously known as Sexual Misconduct Prevention Program)

Within first six (6) months of hire

Annual thereafter

This is a CSU customized on-line program that provides practical learning for identifying, reporting, and preventing campus sexual misconduct, as well as assisting victims of sexual assault in accordance with Title IX. Interactive case studies and videos provide engaging educational content that explains how to respond to known or suspected sexual violence, which includes sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. Injury Illness and Prevention Program

25 minutes

Auto assigned to All Employees

Within 30 days of hire.

Every 3 years thereafter.

Federal and California Regulations require new employees attend the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). This course will introduce employees to the eight elements of California State University (CSU) IIPP. The CSU Channel Islands IIPP establishes a proactive safety program to inform the employee of safety precautions necessary to prevent or minimize hazards, injuries and illnesses. Data Security and FERPA

1 hour

Auto assigned to All Employees

Specifically for Employees with access to protected data and information assets.

Within 30 days of hire.

Annual thereafter

This course raises awareness to the importance of keeping private data secure. The course also provides steps that employees can take to help maintain the security and confidentiality of private information. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guarantees both the confidentiality of students' education records and students' right of access to their own records. Environment Health & Safety TrainingDepends on positionAnnualLaws and regulations mandate many types of learning regarding occupational safety, hazardous materials use, and pollution prevention. Your supervisor or the office of Environment Health & Safety (EHS) can tell you what types of learning and development are required for your position.

CSU Powered Carts

Assigned to CSU/AUX employees who will be driving carts.

Every 4 years

Participants will become familiar with operations, functions, and rules regarding powered carts.

Defensive Driving Fundamentals

45 minutes

Assigned to CSU/AUX employees who are driving University (state) or their own vehicles for state business.

Every 4 years if driving at least once a month

The content in this course is designed to comply with the intent of the applicable regulatory requirements – specify concerns to be addressed before and while driving, use safe driving techniques to avoid collisions, drive safely in various weather conditions, and respond to specific driving emergency situations.

Avoiding Conflicts of Interest (COI)

25 minutes

Employees who have been issued a ProCard

The purpose of conflict of interest laws is to prohibit public employees from personally benefitting at the expense of public interest. The content will review what are considered conflicting interests. Contact HR with questions.

Understanding the Clery Act

Assigned to Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) and select employees

Annual

The Clery Act is a consumer protection law that aims to provide transparency around campus crime policy and statistics. This course educates employees about the laws that mandate reporting requirements. Contact Title IX office with questions.

Mandated Reporter

45 minutes

Assigned to Employees designated to accept complaints​ of unlawful discrimination.

Employees or volunteers whose duties require direct contact with and supervision of minors in the performance of the minors' duties in the workplace.

Additionally, administrators, employees, and regular volunteers whose duties require direct contact with, or supervision of, children may also be required to complete Mandated Reporter training.

One time for required position categories (see EO 1083) and strongly encouraged for all others.

The California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act, California Penal Code §§ 11164-11174.3 ("CANRA" or the "Act"), identifies certain groups of employees as "Mandated Reporters" of child abuse and neglect, and also imposes various obligations on and extends certain protections to those Mandated Reporters as well as their employers. As a covered employer, the California State University (CSU) is required to comply with the Act. Contact Title IX.
