Each social group consists of people who share interests, issues, and a common bond or background, and offer support for each other. At CI we are in currently revamping our social groups to best meet the current needs of the staff at CI. Participants can be: staff, faculty, or student workers.

Active Social Groups:

1:1 Coffee Club

Members will be paired monthly to have a “Get to Know a Co-Worker” virtual coffee, at a time that works best for the pair. This will be an informal group to allow each person to get to know a colleague better and to expand our network of support at CI!

CI Book Club

This is a fun, informal opportunity to read one book a month and meet with your colleagues once a month to discuss it. Meetings with the group usually occur the last week of the month during 12-1 p.m. on the day that the group selects and then a new book is selected by the group. Book selection will be rotated among members and a lengthier book might take two months to read.  Meetings will mostly be virtual via zoom, however, occasional in person meetings could take place if the club members choose to do so.

Self Care & Wellness Group

A support group to learn self care tips, spend time with one another, express feelings, and more.

Previous Types of Social Groups:

We welcome you to create a new Social Group. Please email ci.staffcouncil@csuci.edu to begin the process of establishing a new Affinity Group. Please see the list below of past groups to gather ideas for any future Social Groups you would like to establish.

Biking (Cycling) - This group used to meet monthly and schedule one or two monthly rides. These rides varied in length, difficulty, and type so as to allow more people to participate and in general would involve either a destination, a nature trail, or an event that the group would join with to be a sub-group of.

Community Volunteer - CI employees came together and give back to our campus, local and international communities. We met monthly and hosted one service project per month. Past projects included CI Thanks CI and the December Harbor Wetlands Restoration Project.

Crafting Group - The crafting group was for anyone who engaged in a hand craft, or would like too. There were no limits on knowledge or skill level. All are welcome, especially if members had never tried creating something with their hands or don’t think they could do anything crafty. This group set aside dedicated time for projects, socializing, participated in craft-related volunteer opportunities and tried something new in a workshop.

Foodie - Together this group explored the fusion of food, drinks and our CI community. They held monthly lunch or dinner outings to taste new things, meet friends, and save with Dolphin Discounts.

Gaming - The Gaming Group was designed to connect staff and faculty across campus who are gamers. Whether you were a console, PC, or tabletop gamer you'd be welcomed in this group. The group met to talk about new/upcoming games, grab lunch, and occasionally plan gaming events outside of business hours including LAN parties, online multiplayer sessions, and midnight release parties.

Hiking/Walking - This group met monthly or bi-weekly and scheduled one or two monthly group hikes. These hikes would vary in length, difficulty, and type so as to allow more people to participate and in general would involve either a destination, a nature trail, or a walking event we would join.

Bowling Group - Non-competitive bowling group that just wants to have fun. Bowling on Sunday mornings between 9 and noon, or Open Bowls.

Personal/Professional Development - This group met once a month to share ideas and resources to identify and develop desired skills. The group also partnered with Human Resources to share new personal/professional training programs for staff on campus.

Wellness & Nutrition - This group held collaborative discussions and offered peer support for wellness and nutrition. Discussions occurred regarding meal planning, snacking, exercise and how to stay “on-target” for your particular needs.
