Going Green

CSU Channel Islands Outdoors Program Summary:

The Outdoor Adventure program at California State University Channel Islands will challenge and encourage everyone to discover something new about themselves as they start on an amazing experience. The programs couple sport-like activities with the aesthetic pleasures of the outdoors. Outdoor Adventures utilize nature’s resources (oceans, mountains, rivers, and wilderness) to challenge the physical body as well as the mind. Outdoor Adventure at CI offers local day hikes, overnight camping trips, and sunset kayaking to the Channel Islands Harbor, sport fishing, sailing, and various hiking excursions in Malibu, Ojai, Santa Cruz Island, the Matilija Creek, and Santa Rosa.

Grotto Trail hike (Malibu)

This is a great hike for anyone looking for a little bit of everything. The hike provides huge boulders, steep walls, shady paths, waterfalls, and caves.

Horn Canyon Camping (Ojai)

This is a great trip to introduce anyone to the joys and excitement of backpacking.

Nicholas Flat Hike (Malibu)

This is where endurance and adventure meet. The Nicholas flat trail is far from flat. With a steady 1,600 foot incline, the adventurers will find themselves among rolling hills, great views, and a great workout.

Newton Canyon hike (Malibu)

Newton Canyon is a great hike for anyone looking for the peace and serenity of nature. The hike provides shade from oak trees along the trail and the soothing sounds of a waterfall.

Santa Rosa – Wildwood Park Hike

Serenity and adventure meet at the Santa Rosa Wildwood Park hike. This aesthetically pleasing hike along Mountclef Ridge in Wildwood Park provides beautiful views from the Santa Rosa Valley to the Santa Susana and Topatopa Mountains, as well as the Conejo Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains.

Sandstone Peak Hike

Where challenge and beauty collide, Sandstone Peak offers 6 miles of gorgeous views and a great cardio workout. Highlights include the amazing Echo Cliffs (a popular rock climbing location), a house-sized boulder gracefully balanced on a small rock beneath, a giant split rock where participants can explore between the sheer walls, dazzling giant sandstone formations, and breathtaking views from the top of Sandstone Peak.

Matilija Creek Hike

Matilija Creek is a demanding 7 mile hike through difficult terrain. This trek is near a spectacular section of Matilija Creek that flows over unusual rock slabs. This hike also offers many large pools, and cascades abound over a half mile section of water.

Santa Cruz Island Campout (Channel Islands / Overnight)

Spend the night on an island and get ready for adventure. Santa Cruz Island is the perfect place to spend time with friends and get back to nature. The theme for this weekend event is “leave no trace,” and activities teach how to live and interact with nature in this rustic setting.
