Q: Who can use Degree Planner?

A: Both undergraduate students, faculty and advising staff have access to the Degree Planner. Students access the Degree Planner through the Student Center and Faculty and advising staff access the Degree Planner through the Advisee Student Center.

Q: How can a student access Degree Planner?

A: Log into myCI

Q: Why should students use the Degree Planner?

A: Degree Planner shows students what courses they need to take each term to earn a degree in the time that best fits the student. The Degree Planner helps the campus know how many sections of a course to offer in a particular term.

Q: Does Degree Planner handle multiple majors and/or minors?

A: Yes, Degree Planner allows for the construction of a complete degree plan as long as the majors and minors are available in the tool.

Q: Can I change my major or add a minor through the Degree Planner tool?

A: While the Degree Planner has a “what-if” report that will allow students to explore changing their major or adding a major/minor, it doesn’t replace the formal process to request a change. We recommend students consult with their advisor before pursuing a new program and/or making formal changes.

Q: If a student changes their major, will their new major curriculum plan be displayed on Degree Planner?

A: Yes, if that major and catalog year have been built in Degree Planner. Change of major requests are processed through Registrar’s Office and can take several days to process. Once they have processed your form they will notify you via email and Degree Planner will be immediately available.

Q: How does Degree Planner account for changes to curricula and academic policies?

A: Degree planner will be updated and maintained regularly to reflect curriculum changes in degree requirements as approved by the University Curriculum Committee. Academic policies are reflected in Degree Planner when possible, but students and advisors are encouraged to review the Degree Progress Report (CARR) regularly.

Q: Why does the Degree Planner sometimes recommend taking several challenging courses within a single semester rather than spreading the difficulty level out between semesters more evenly?

A: The Degree Planner attempts to construct the most timely path to a degree based on an advising roadmap provided by the University. It also takes into account key pre-requisites, co-requisites, and when courses are typically offered. The Planner does not attempt to evaluate the mix of courses recommended in a term as many factors can contribute to the appropriateness of the schedule for an individual student. The recommended path should be reviewed and adjusted by the student and advisor in order to maximize the student’s ability to succeed.

Q: Does Degree Planner capture a failed course?

A: Yes, if a student fails a course required for their degree, the requirement will repopulate in the Degree Planner.

Q: What does “Lock” do?

A: By clicking the Padlock Icon, the specified requirement and course will remain in that term. A course can be locked for various reasons: it was placed by the student or advisor, the lock option is clicked, or the course is chosen by the “Add An Elective Course” link.

*Please note you can release the lock to allow courses to arrange back to the original sequence.

Q: How are changes saved in Degree Planner?

A: Degree Planner saves automatically every time you make a change within the tool.

Q: Who should I contact if I need additional assistance with the Degree Planner?

A: Students who need assistance with Degree Planner should contact their major Faculty Advisor, Academic Advising, or Registrar’s Office.

Q: Where can a student or advisor access help documents?

A: How-To Guides and/or videos can be found on the main Degree Planner web page.

Q: How can I be sure my plan will meet all the degree requirements and allow me to graduate?

The Degree Planner offers a Preview Plan function. By using this function, a new page will appear and list out all degree requirements and what terms to complete them. You may also review the Past Courses section in the Preview Plan function, or by clicking the open button on the upper right corner of the Past Courses Tile.

Please Note: Students and Advisors must review the Degree Progress Report (CARR) as this is the tool we use to graduate students. If you need assistance with your Degree Progress Report, please contact Academic Advising or Registrar’s Office.
