The CSU provides employees with a variety of paid and unpaid time-off benefits. Benefits usage and accrual provisions vary among different employee categories. For more detailed information regarding the time off and leave programs listed below, please refer to your specific CSU Benefits Summary or the appropriate CSU policy.

Paid Leave

  • Holidays
    The CSU offers employees 14 paid holidays each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and one you may take any time during the year.
  • Vacation
    You earn vacation days based on your years of service. Part-time employees accrue vacation on a prorated basis. Academic year employees do not earn vacation.
  • Sick Leave
    For each month of continuous service, you accumulate eight hours of credit for sick leave with pay. Part-time employees accrue sick leave on a prorated basis. Accrued sick leave is converted to service credit for employees retiring with CalPERS.
  • Bereavement/Funeral Leave
    If you experience the death of an immediate family member or a significantly close relative, the CSU provides you with bereavement/funeral leave with pay.
  • Organ Donor Leave Program
    After exhausting all available sick leave you are eligible for up to 30 days paid leave if you donate an organ, and up to five days paid leave if you donate bone marrow.
  • Jury Duty
    The CSU will continue your salary while on jury duty, regardless of length of jury service. In order to receive your salary for days served in a state court, you must submit Proof of Service, which will be provided to you as a state of California employee. For days served as a juror in a federal court, you must make your jury duty stipend payable to the CSU. You are entitled to keep any travel expenses (i.e., mileage) associated with jury duty service.
  • Military Leave
    All employees are eligible for military leave. If an employee is required to report for active military duty in any branch of the United States armed forces, the employee is entitled to receive up to 30 days of paid military leave for emergency, temporary and/or indefinite assignments in a fiscal year upon meeting eligibility criteria, if required. Any CSU employee who takes a leave of absence to enter military service is required to submit official military documents regarding the leave to the appropriate administrator. The 30 day paid leave entitlement for temporary military leave is considered separate from the paid entitlement for an emergency or indefinite military leave.

Unpaid Leave

  • Leaves of Absence
    Additional leave programs are available. 
  • Reproductive Loss

    Beginning January 1, 2024, All employees may be eligible for up to five days unpaid leave following a reproductive related loss. This leave is separate from other leaves offered to employees for their serious illness or to care for a family member with a serious illness.

    What Is a Reproductive Loss Event?
    A reproductive loss event is defined as the final day of any of the following:
    • Failed adoption
    • Failed surrogacy
    • Miscarriage
    • Stillbirth
    • Unsuccessful assisted reproduction
    Leave Details
    • Employees may take up to five days per event, with a maximum of 20 days within a 12-month period.
    • Leave days do not need to be consecutive.
    • Leave must be completed within three months of the reproductive loss event.
    • If the employee is on another type of leave (e.g., Pregnancy Disability Leave or CFRA), the reproductive loss leave must be taken within three months after that leave ends.
    • Employees may use available vacation, personal holiday, sick leave, or compensatory time off in lieu of unpaid.
    Some reproductive loss events, such as miscarriages and stillbirths, may also be covered by bereavement leave.
