Transfer Credit Evaluations Overview

The Registrar’s Office evaluates transfer credit upon receipt of official transcripts from another institution. Following review by evaluators, an email notification is sent to the student. To access the evaluation, go to your Student Center in myCI and choose Transfer Credit Report from the drop-down menu.

Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended prior to your CSUCI graduation date must be submitted and considered in the awarding of your degree. All baccalaureate-level transferable units will be calculated into your overall grade point average.

Transfer Credit for Incoming Students

For new freshmen students, if you completed coursework at a community college or 4-year university while in high school please submit official transcripts from that institution. High school or unofficial transcripts will not be accepted.

For new transfer students, the courses from the transcript are initially posted based on established articulation agreements. At this time, the transfer credit evaluation is considered “unofficial.” Following review by evaluators, an email notification is sent to the student and a message is posted in the student’s CI Academic Requirements Report (CARR) indicating that the transfer credit evaluation is “official.”

New transfer students will have their transfer credit officially evaluated before the start of their first term at Channel Islands, provided that they have submitted all final, official transcripts by published Admission deadlines. However, evaluators will focus on posting transfer courses that meet pre-requisites before new student orientation dates.

Fall 2024 Timeline

  • Preliminary Transcript Deadline - March 15, 2024
    • Students that submit transcripts by 03/15/2024, and sign up for an advisement/registration session, will have an evaluation completed prior to their specific session
  • Full evaluation of all transcripts will be completed no later than 08/23/2024

Students will receive an email notification to their University address once their evaluation has been completed.

Transfer Credit for Continuing Students

Students who are currently attending Channel Islands, but complete additional coursework at a community college or other institution must send official transcripts to Registrar’s Office in order for the courses to be posted. Unofficial transcripts or grade reports will not be accepted.

Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended prior to your CSUCI graduation date must be submitted and considered in the awarding of your degree. All baccalaureate-level transferable units will be calculated into your overall grade point average.

Additionally, if students complete pre-requisite courses at another institution, the transfer course must be posted to the students’ record in order to meet the pre-requisite at Channel Islands.

Transfer Credit Limitations

Credit from community colleges

  • A maximum of 70 transferable units may be earned toward the minimum unit requirement for graduation (typically 120 units). Courses beyond this limit may be used to satisfy specific subject requirements as appropriate
  • No upper-division credit is granted for courses taken at a community college.

Credit from another 4-year college or university:

  • While there is no specific limit on transfer courses, students must satisfy Channel Islands’ residency requirements for graduation (30 overall units, including 24 upper division units and 12 units in the major).

Credit from quarter system institutions:

  • Courses from quarter system institutions will be converted to semester units. Quarter units are divided by 1.5 to determine semester units. For example, 5.0 quarter units will equal 3.33 semester units.

Note: Once you have earned credit for a specific course, either by exam or transfer, you cannot earn credit again for the same course.

Transfer Credit FAQ

What if I believe there is an adjustment needed in my Transfer Credit Report or CARR?
If you believe there is an adjustment that should be made in your Transfer Credit Report or CARR then you can send an email to the Registrar's Office at registrar@csuci.edu requesting a review of your transfer credit.

Please include the following in your email:

  • Full Name (First, Last)
  • Nine-digit student ID number
  • Identify what you are seeing, and how you would like it to be updated
    • Include specific sections of the Transfer Credit Report or CARR
    • Include specific course prefix and number information (e.g. PSY 100)

Your request will be reviewed by an evaluator and you will receive a response to your student email account within two business days.

What if I did not receive the credit I had anticipated?
If you feel that you earned specific course credit that you did not receive after your official evaluation, you may consider requesting a course substitution for major or minor requirements, or a course substitution for general education/graduation requirements. For further information on how to request a course substitution, visit our Course Substitution Procedures webpage.

How is international credit treated?
Students who have attended an international institution, and did not go through the CSU IP program, are required to have their foreign credits evaluated by an approved international evaluations company. The work has to be evaluated, regardless of how the credits are used in the major program, because all transferable classes impact the final GPA. The evaluation must include course-by-course credit, as well as indication of course level (lower vs. upper division).

A recommended evaluation service is the International Education Research Foundation (IERF) http://ierf.org/
